The Thump . . . A Retrospective Account of DC Club Scene

Back from the Basics
It’s never going to stop. That feeling when you hear the pulsating thump, accompanied by a fierce rhythm.

For the past 35 years, I’ve been glued to Dance Music, or Club Dance Music, as it is classically called, both as an enthusiast and a DJ. This is not the radio stuff. But the kind that moves you viscerally. That sound. The melody. The memories of a time when Night Clubs were (mostly) about the music and dancing, not voyeurism, grinding, and champagne in the VIP.

Dj’s used to spend months and years learning how to perfect beat-mixing records that drew from the crowd’s energy while also educating their ears; Promoters had a commitment to the music back then, even if they were making money too. Some clubs had no promoters at all as other elements were the draw. Club owners owned Dance Clubs first, and a business second. And clubbers just reveled in the music—for the most part.

Even hip-hop sounded better then—I say “even” because if you started going to clubs in the 2000s, you’d think that the club world was always dominated by that genre. In reality, the notion of “club” dance music historically was more associated with Disco, Euro High Energy, House, Trance, Techno, and the like. With the various changes in the music industry (yes, neoliberalism hit that too), mass tastes, and technological advancements, that world lives through a smaller number of venues in every city, almost world-wide.

Despite notable exceptions among DJ’s, promoters, owners, and clubbers, things are different, to say the least.

Yet, it is sill often exhilarating. We can’t bring all the magic back, but we can relive it virtually as we celebrate the current moment in club life. This is what I wish to do with many among this community, new and old, by launching a steaming podcast of music sets, writing, interviewing, and hosting testimonies from that magic era, from the mid-1980s to the early 2000’s, right before things went to shit . . . for the most part.
